THR Process (Total Heat Recovery) and OHT (Oxidative Heat Treatment)

Black Liquor Oxidation has two main purposes, one is economical (diminish sulfur loss that occurs during the multiple effect evaporation), and the other is environmental (diminish air emission of compounds that results in intense odor sensation - TRS).

It the process of transforming the sodium sulfide present in the liquor into sodium thiosulfate, as per the equation:
 
 
   
 
The THR processes (Total Heat Recovery) and OHT (Oxidative Heat Treatment), developed by Air Products, besides serving the above mentioned objectives, also allow additional benefits, such as:
 
 
a) Plants that use the multiple effect evaporation system
  Recovering of heat generated by the oxidation reaction;
  Sulfur oxidation among the evaporation effects.
   
b) Plants that have recovering boiler's limitation
  Reduction of the heating value of the liquor that goes into the boiler;
  Increment of 3% to 5% in the black liquor processing capacity;
  Recovering of heat generated by the oxidation reaction.
